As a massage therapist with many years of experience, I am always exploring ways to enhance my practice and provide the best possible care for my clients. I’ve spent many years travelling the globe, looking after my own wellbeing and immersing myself in many diverse massage traditions.

From the sun soaked shores of Egypt to the tranquil havens of Thailand, I’ve had the privilege of experiencing massage treatments in various countries, including Turkey, India, Malaysia, and Tunisia, to name just a few. Every destination adds its own unique touches, techniques, and cultural significance, enhancing my understanding of the power of massage.

In these blog posts, I aim to share some of my recent experiences from my travels. If you are curious about what to expect from a traditional massage in various countries or wondering about the costs, I am here to give you a glimpse into the world of global massage practices.

My Spa Experience: A Mix of Relaxation and Room for Improvement

We did not stay at this hotel, but during a recent visit to Penang, I decided to try out the on site spa, which was located on the first floor and accessible via a few winding corridors. On arrival at the reception, I had a brief wait before someone came to assist me. After completing a consultation form (a rarity in some countries, as therapists often don’t even glance at it!), I was guided to the treatment room.

The room itself was dimly lit, with a massage bed positioned in the centre and a shower off to one side. Standard disposable underwear was provided, and I was asked to lie face down to begin the treatment.

Full-Body Exfoliation

The first part of the session was a full body exfoliation, which lasted about 20 minutes. The therapist then asked me to shower to rinse off the exfoliating granules. While 10 minutes were allocated for this, I found it excessive, I was done and ready to continue within five minutes. The therapist stepped out during this time, giving me privacy.

The Massage

Following the shower, the room felt a bit chilly, but I warmed up quickly. Draping consisted of a towel and sarong, providing adequate coverage. The massage itself was quite good. The therapist checked in regarding pressure and used oil to work on all areas thoroughly.

The Facial

After the massage, the session continued with a 30 minute facial, which was a nice addition to the experience. It began with a gentle cleanse to remove impurities, followed by the application of a soothing mask. The therapist then used light, relaxing strokes to apply serums and moisturisers, leaving my skin feeling refreshed and hydrated. Be mindful that they do not ask about skin types or preferences, so if you have sensitive skin, this may not be the treatment for you.

The facial was a calming way to end the treatment, and it complemented the earlier treatments.

The Verdict

For the two-hour treatment at this hotel, the experience offered good value for money. However, a few aspects could be improved:

  • Room Temperature: The treatment room could have been warmer for more comfort.
  • Noise Levels: Unfortunately, being so close to reception meant I could hear everything – phones ringing, staff chatting, and laughter. This constant background noise made it challenging to fully relax.
  • Attentiveness: Staff could be more discreet and attentive within the whole spa, especially during treatments.

On a positive note, my therapist was lovely and friendly, professional, and skilled. While the experience had its flaws, the quality of the treatment itself made it worthwhile. If you’re looking for an affordable spa experience while staying at this hotel or the surrounding area this might still be a good option, provided you can overlook some minor distractions.

A Rainforest Retreat: My Birthday Massage Experience

Celebrating my 50th birthday with a special massage treatment felt like the perfect way to mark the occasion. While I was eager to indulge in some well-deserved relaxation, I also took the opportunity to observe how the hotel performs its spa offerings—something I always enjoy critiquing.

The Welcome

Upon arrival, I was greeted warmly by my therapist, who offered me a refreshing cold tea and a chilled towel, always the lovely touches that set a calming tone. I also filled out the standard consultation form, although again it wasn’t referred to during the session.

After finishing my drink, I was led to the treatment room. The journey there led us up steps through the trees, complete with monkeys, for a secluded and tranquil setting. The resort’s layout involves numerous levels and steps, which might pose a challenge for less mobile guests.

The Treatment Room

The treatment room was a stunning wooden structure nestled in the rainforest. Large windows offered views of the greenery, and the space was beautifully arranged with two massage beds (ideal for couples treatments), a changing area, and a private bathing area and toilet, accessible via steps.

The Massage

Before the massage began, the therapist asked about any areas requiring extra attention and provided disposable underwear and a robe for me to change into. The session started with a seated foot wash, during which we exchanged friendly conversation about my travels so far.

The full-body massage followed, incorporating oils and beginning with firm hands-on pressure to help me relax. The therapist worked intuitively, addressing each area of my body with care and expertise. The rainforest views and the calm atmosphere aided the sense of tranquility, allowing me to fully unwind.

The Aftercare

After the treatment, I was given time to change and offered a pot of tea. Always a thoughtful way to round off the experience.

The Verdict

This rainforest retreat was a wonderful birthday treat that delivered on relaxation and indulgence. The setting was beautiful, and the therapist’s skill and friendliness made the experience even more enjoyable.

Pros:

  • Beautiful treatment room with rainforest views.
  • Friendly and skilled therapist who created a comfortable atmosphere.
  • Thoughtful touches like the refreshing drink and cold towel, the foot wash, and post-massage tea.

Cons:

  • The resort’s many steps may be difficult for those with limited mobility.
  • I wish I had more time to explore the other treatments on offer!

If you’re looking for a peaceful escape to celebrate a special occasion or simply unwind, this rainforest retreat offers a truly memorable experience.

Step Foot – George Town

An Unforgettable Massage Experience in George Town

During our stay at the charming Campbell House Hotel, the manager recommended a local spa in George Town. One morning, I decided to wander out and check it out, curious about what this small, two-story spa, primarily a foot spa, had to offer.

2 hour full body – MYR160

The Welcome

Upon arrival, shoes are left outside, a common custom in many Asian spas. I was greeted by a friendly man who was happy to help. I asked for a two-hour relaxation massage, having no idea what it would cost. To my surprise, he said they could accommodate me right away.

The Setting

I was guided up two steep flights of stairs, passing a few female therapists along the way. The treatment room, located on the top floor, was simple and rustic but functional. Curtains hung at the windows, and a screen and curtain loosely sectioned off the area. While not luxurious, there was soft background music for the session.

The Massage

The therapist turned out to be the man who had greeted me earlier. For those who value privacy, it’s worth noting that this treatment is not for the shy or prudish. I was asked to undress down to my underwear without much privacy and to lie on the bed as directed.

The massage began with firm pressure and some techniques I had not experienced, including the therapist getting onto the massage bed to adjust and crack my back. Tiger Balm was used as the medium for the session, which came with an additional cost, but I decided to go with it.

The treatment was incredibly thorough, targeting every muscle, joint, tendon, and ligament in my body. The therapist stretched my body, worked out areas of tension, and used a variety of techniques I’d never experienced before. This was far from a relaxing, nod-off kind of massage, at moments it was intense, and at times, even painful, but  in a good way.

The session ended with me seated on the edge of the bed while the therapist stretched my arms, neck, and back, leaving no part of my body unattended.

The Aftermath

Wow! That’s the only way to describe it. Despite moments of discomfort, the overall experience left me feeling rejuvenated and incredibly relaxed. The next day, my leg muscles were slightly tender, but it was well worth it.

After the massage, I was guided back downstairs and offered a cup of tea, again a nice touch to conclude the experience.

The Cost

Now for the jaw-dropping part: the price. For this two-hour massage, I paid just £28! I couldn’t believe the value for money.

The Verdict

This was one of the most unique and effective massages I’ve ever had. While it’s not for everyone, especially those who prefer more privacy or a gentler approach, it was a transformative experience that left me feeling incredible.

Pros:

  • Extremely thorough and effective massage techniques.
  • Unbeatable value for money.
  • Friendly and skilled therapist.

Cons:

  • Minimal privacy during the session.
  • Rustic setup may not appeal to those seeking a luxury spa experience.

If you’re in George Town and open to a no-frills, intensive massage experience, this is the place to go. For just £28, you’ll walk away feeling like a new person!

A Luxurious Spa Experience at The Oberoi, Mumbai

During our 2 night stay at The Oberoi in Mumbai, I decided to indulge in a spa treatment. Located on the same floor as the swimming pool, the spa offers an oasis of calm amidst the bustling city.

The Welcome

On arrival, I was asked to complete a consultation form and was then shown to the stunning changing rooms. These were equipped with everything you could possibly need, including lockers, fluffy bathrobes, disposable underwear, and slippers. Additional amenities included a steam room, showers, and toiletries such as deodorant, shower gel, shampoo, hair serums, combs, hairdryers, and straighteners. The attention to detail was amazing, they had thought of everything.

Although I didn’t use the steam room, it’s a great option if you arrive early and want to unwind before your treatment.

The Treatment

My therapist greeted me warmly and escorted me to a dimly lit treatment room with a serene atmosphere and a bed in the centre. She reviewed my consultation form, discussing any areas of concern before beginning the session.

The treatment started with a soothing foot wash. She used a beautiful copper foot bowl, with sections to place your feet on. I have never seen these before. They were very unique.. I’m now considering getting one for my own treatment room!

For the main treatment, I chose the signature massage, which featured warmed kasa bowls, a technique I had never experienced before. The massage was a full body treatment from head to toe, combining various techniques with the soothing heat and smooth strokes of the kasa bowls.

Relaxation doesn’t come easily to me, but this treatment was exceptional. I even nodded off a couple of times, a rare occurrence that speaks volumes about how effective the massage was!

Post-Treatment

Once the massage was complete, I was given ample time to change and freshen up. I was then offered a pot of tea, a perfect way to end the experience.

I also had the pleasure of chatting with the spa manager, who was passionate about her role and her team. It was wonderful to see someone so dedicated to creating an exceptional spa experience for every guest.

The Verdict

5-star hotel, 5-star treatment! My experience at The Oberoi Spa surpassed all expectations, which has been my consistent experience with massages in India.

For £89 at a luxury hotel, I found the treatment to be excellent value for money. The thoughtful details, skilled therapist, and calm environment all contributed to an unforgettable experience.

Pros:

  • Beautiful facilities with every amenity you could need.
  • Attentive and skilled therapist who ensured a deeply relaxing session.
  • The unique addition of warmed kasa bowls elevated the treatment.

Cons:

  • Honestly, none. Everything was great!

If you’re in India, I highly recommend visiting The Oberoi Spa for a luxurious and relaxing experience.
